The annual “Giant Blue Whale Migration” brings hundreds of blue whales each spring & summer to the waters off Newport Beach. Over 300 blue whales were viewed last summer 2015. Giant blue whales were once considered quite rare off southern California, but over the last seven years this has changed dramatically with hundreds of giant blue whales spotted each year. These giants of the sea reach lengths of up to 90 feet and are the largest of all animals. Along with viewing these giants view the second largest whale in the world, the finback whale which which is often seen feeding in the same areas as the blue whales. Others whale s encountered include humpback whales and minke whales. Along with whales, giant pods of common and bottlenose dolphin are also very likely with pods numbering in the hundreds to over one thousand frequently viewed. These dolphin pods come within arms reach as they play along side the whale watching ship.

Just outside of Newport Bay is the beginning of one of the largest marine protected areas in southern California created to protect this rich ecosystem for future generations. The marine sanctuary covers over 15 miles and provides a haven for all marine creatures including whales and dolphin. The marine reserve stretches along much of the Newport & Laguna Beach coastline and along with being a mecca for whale watching also offers some of the most beautiful coastline in Southern California..

Join Newport Landing’s whale watching cruises offered daily and view the largest creature on earth. Located on the Balboa Peninsula just across from Balboa Island.

The Wedge Tree Has Fallen

This is what it looks like today… so sad. After the great Lucifer storm, we are all at a loss. This was one of my favorite trees in Newport.  I watched a friend get married and countless sunsets. I enjoyed the surf when I was younger and now bring my kids here often. We can’t believe this tree has fallen…

The Famous Wedge Tree

My daughter noticed instantly that “The Wedge” has changed forever…. How do you feel?

A large crowd gathered around the Balboa Island post office of Friday night. After 42 years with the US Post Office, Jeff Regan officially retired. He lowered the flag for his last time after overseeing the Balboa Island location for 11 years. He was surprised with the local turnout. I wish I would have known about this so I could have helped make the island residents aware of this special moment. Jeff lives on Marine Avenue and will continue to enjoy the island lifestyle.  After many hugs and congratulations, the locals celebrated at The Village Inn.
