09 Jun Paddleboarding on Balboa Island
You’ve seen people stand up paddleboarding (SUP), but have you ever tried it? Paddleboarding is a fun way to work out on the water, and there’s no better place to do it than Balboa Island. It’s a must-add to your vacation bucket list!
SUP is fairly low maintenance, requiring just a board and a paddle. Once you jump on and get your balance, your upper-body and core workout begins. Athletes love the cross-training aspect of paddleboarding, but it’s easy enough for a novice to get the hang of in one session. Best of all, you’ll get one-of-a-kind views of the island and harbor ocean life.
Balboa Island’s unique location makes it perfect for paddleboarding. You’re steps from the beach from virtually anywhere, it’s not a long walk across the sand, and the calm harbor waters make it simple to launch your board.
You can rent a board from Island Paddleboards, located inside Persimmon Tree at 229 Marine Avenue, 949-673-4280. Island Paddleboards is full-service – they will bring the boards down to the water and provide lessons, as well as kayak rentals.
Mornings are the perfect time to go out. The water is quiet, with little boat traffic, and the winds are light. You can easily spend an hour or two exploring the beautiful harbor area.
If you really get hooked, you can buy your gear. A full set with board, paddle, handle and leash will run you about $850 at Costco. Or if you’d like a larger, more personalized selection, try Paddle Surf Warehouse in Costa Mesa at 949-574-5897.
SUP is a trend that’s here to stay. Add paddleboarding on Balboa Island to your vacation list of “must-dos”!
